Becoming a manual handling trainer means learning to teach, demonstrate and assess safer practice, as well as developing your own practical skills. In care settings, that means focusing on the moving and positioning of people and the situations staff encounter every day.
Who is this route for?
Our five-day Manual Handling Train the Trainer course is for care organisations developing in-house trainers, senior carers and team leaders moving into training, independent trainers, and trainers working for training companies. It focuses on moving and positioning people in health and social care.
If you need practical training for your own care role, rather than learning to teach others, start with the two-day All Wales Manual Handling Passport course. Our Passport guide explains the framework.
What experience should you have?
Experience in a care setting and a good understanding of the All Wales Manual Handling Passport are recommended, ideally through recently attending the two-day Passport course. Familiarity with everyday care practice gives you useful examples to draw on when learning to teach.
These are recommendations rather than mandatory entry requirements. You do not need previous teaching experience. Day one introduces teaching and assessment skills. If you are unsure whether your background is suitable, talk to us before booking.
What will you learn?
The programme brings together three parts of the trainer role:
- Practical knowledge: moving and positioning principles, risk assessment, safer techniques and the use of equipment such as hoists and slide sheets.
- Teaching skills: planning structured sessions, explaining and demonstrating techniques, and helping learners with different levels of experience.
- Assessment skills: observing practice, giving constructive feedback, checking understanding and assessing learner competence.
The course also covers relevant legislation, policies, anatomy and injury prevention. The full course page sets out the syllabus.
How the five-day course works
- Day 1 — Teaching and assessment: build your approach to planning, delivering and assessing training.
- Day 2 — Theory: develop the knowledge underpinning moving and positioning practice.
- Days 3 and 4 — Practical skills: develop and practise moving and handling techniques and equipment use.
- Day 5 — Assessment: demonstrate your knowledge, practical competence and training skills.
Assessment takes place during and at the end of the programme. It typically includes a risk assessment scenario, knowledge questions and a teach-back activity. A teach-back gives you the opportunity to deliver part of a session and demonstrate how you explain and support learning.
Check the timetable for your chosen date before booking, including the final assessment day. The booking page shows the individual session dates, times, venue and assigned trainer.
What can you teach after successful completion?
Successful learners can deliver All Wales Manual Handling Passport training to their own organisation’s staff and to external customers. This makes the course relevant both to employers developing internal trainers and to independent trainers or training companies.
Keep your delivery within the content covered and your own competence, and adapt it to the people, equipment and procedures in the setting where you teach. Completing a trainer course is the start of an ongoing responsibility to maintain your skills.
Your certificate and what is included
On successful completion, you receive a certificate issued by Legacy Training Services. The per-person price shown for your chosen course date includes VAT, assessment, certification and training materials.
You receive slides, lesson plans and supporting materials that you can adapt to your own setting when training staff or external customers.
Keeping your trainer skills current
Continue to use your practical and teaching skills, seek feedback on your delivery and review your knowledge when equipment, procedures or service needs change. Discuss development and refresher needs with the organisations you train.
Existing trainers can explore our three-day Manual Handling Train the Trainer Refresher. It revisits training delivery, theory, practical skills and assessment. If you have not trained for some time, contact us to discuss which route is most appropriate.
Training is one part of safer moving and handling. Employers also need appropriate risk assessments, equipment and arrangements to monitor practice. HSE’s guidance on managing moving and handling risks explains these wider responsibilities.
